I’ve struggled with OCD my entire life (mostly ROCD as an adult)…but I didn’t know that’s what it was. I thought it was just anxiety disorder. Turns out, what I was doing to calm my anxiety disorder was compulsions. After the death of my mother I was feeling very lost. Unbeknownst to me (or her for that matter) she was aiding in my compulsions by constantly reassuring me. When I didn’t have that reassurance anymore I was really scared. I was having existential OCD, but would do mental compulsions to get myself out of it. The big trigger was finally my relationship. After about 6 months with a serious boyfriend I started to freak out and couldn’t see him anymore. I was worried I didn’t really love him and I was using him. I found NOCD through a ROCD episode of a podcast and signed up. My therapist, Gladys, was amazing and taught me that so many things that I was doing were compulsions. What also blew my mind was how people without OCD get these nasty intrusive thoughts like me, but they don’t let it ruin their life. It really put things into perspective. Am I totally fixed? No. I wish that was true. I can’t sit here and say I’ve never done another compulsion. But now when I give myself medical diagnoses or have a nasty existential thought or am worried about my relationship I can take a step back and recognize what I’m doing are compulsions and that I just need to sit and be uncomfortable. I’m so thankful to have found NOCD and to start living life! It’s hard work, but there’s hope for us.

Gladys works so well with my 13 year old son. He has come a long way with just a few sessions with her. Gladys thinks outside the box and sets up a session in such a way that he has some real life exposures. We are so grateful for her.
