During my over 40-year career in mental health, I have worked with various patient populations. One of my favorite groups is patients with OCD because I can, in most cases, help them reduce their symptoms and regain control of their lives in a fairly short amount of time. Using Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP), I coach patients to master their OCD symptoms. ERP involves confronting obsession-based fears, and doing so can be quite a liberating experience.
I became a Psychologist because I like to help people change. Patients generally do not seek help until OCD is dominating their lives. OCD is like a bully in that the more you give into OCD, the more it takes. I teach patients how to fight back and regain much of what they have lost. ERP can be like climbing a mountain. It's challenging and sometimes feels like it is all uphill. My patients often tell me that it was well worth the work it took to get there, although it's not perfect on the other side. I frequently come to admire my patients because of their willingness to face their fears and endure anxiety. Courage is being afraid and doing it anyway. My OCD patients are some of the most courageous people I have ever met.
