Why I became a therapist

My first career was in business. I enjoyed it, but what I really wanted was to make a difference in people's lives. One of the reasons I specialize in OCD is because it's one of the most tangible ways we can help someone go from struggling tremendously to struggling less and becoming much more functional.

How I create a safe, supportive environment in therapy

I believe it's the job of every therapist to create a safe and supportive environment. We learn empathy, active listening, and how to be present, but I also believe many people come into this field because we're good at helping others feel empowered and feel like they can truly be themselves. As someone who has worked primarily with minority communities, I've found that people feel comfortable sharing what makes them uniquely and authentically themselves.

My experience working with diverse communities

As someone who is Muslim and of Arab Palestinian descent, I take great pride in my identity and in working with people from many different backgrounds. I've treated people from many cultures and religions, including Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, and Buddhists. I've also worked with people across the gender spectrum, from trans men and trans women to straight men and straight women. My goal is always to create a space where every one of my Members feels understood and respected.

My message to you if you're considering therapy

I usually tell people to give therapy at least three sessions. Maybe one day you're having a bad day. Maybe one day I'm having a bad day. If after that it doesn't feel like the right fit, that's okay. This isn't a forever thing. You can try it, and if it's not right for you, you don't have to continue.
