Helene Titelbaum

Licensed Therapist, LICSW

I view the process of therapy as a journey we're on together. I'm here to understand, and I'll be supportive and collaborative. I'm here to help you define your goals and work toward them in every session. Outside of work, I love to be outdoors; I appreciate the grounding effect that being in nature has on me. I also love to listen to podcasts and audiobooks.

Get to know Helene Titelbaum

I've been curious about the human experience every step of the way. Growing up, I watched people in my family struggle to understand each other. I wanted to help people overcome that same difficulty. On some level, I was already developing those skills in my childhood, and later I just adapted them professionally.

Earlier in my career, I worked with several people who had OCD, and I wanted to get better at helping them. Before coming to NOCD, I worked in a pediatric primary care setting where I was seeing so many presentations of OCD at younger and younger ages. I saw how misunderstood and misdiagnosed it was. It drove me to want to gain further skills in that direction.

I have worked with kids, families, and adults with a range of anxiety conditions and depression. I've treated trauma and multigenerational trauma, as well as many comorbidities with OCD and family systems issues.

If you've had prior experience in counseling and ERP is new to you, this is going to feel different. It isn't going to be just us talking about things. We’re going to be doing things together and moving toward action and change. It might feel daunting or overwhelming. But you are way more capable than you realize. You're able to do hard things.

Know that this is a place to work toward feeling safe. I'm not here to judge. I'm here to understand. It can feel hard to share things that feel private and personal when you don't know how somebody might react. But sometimes, when we let ourselves approach things that feel uncertain, the benefits can be greater than we think.

I feel like the part of my brain that was taken up with OCD thoughts and actions has been almost totally freed up so I can use it for being more creative and just living my life. So much angst and worry are gone, and I have the tools to deal with it when things come up. My therapist, Helene, was so understanding and also demanding, when that was needed. ERP is not comfortable, but I knew I could do it because I felt so understood and supported by Helene. I've been thinking about her lately because I'm visiting my family, and I have been doing some emotionally challenging things that would have been extremely difficult if it weren't for her help. My aunt passed away in July, and I needed to go through some things (artwork, personal tchotchkes, etc.) to decide what I wanted to take home with me. I was moderately uncomfortable while I was going through the items - mostly because my family members were sitting there with me, and I didn't want to explain about OCD and that it might be hard for me to make decision after decision. I also didn't feel comfortable doing as much verbal processing as I need. (I think I ended up doing a "normal" amount of having trouble deciding and of thinking out loud.) It definitely wasn't unbearable, and when I got finished, I was really surprised at how calm I felt. I'm proud of myself and so thankful for Helene's help!
