She/Her
Licensed Therapist, LPC
Hiking is my self care. As part of that, my husband and I like to explore old mines. Once we were inside a mine with no light, and my anxiety went way up. I was having a really hard time. My husband said, "You can leave and go back outside." I said, "No, I want to be here. I like exploring these spaces." I stuck through it; I didn't leave. Today, I can do things that are really good for me, and manage my anxiety.

I have struggled with generalized anxiety disorder. I now do a lot of response prevention myself; it's part of my lifestyle. I tell members, 'I take my anxiety with me. I can tolerate feeling uncomfortable.' There will be days that it's not easy. But with this treatment, you can live the life you want to live.
My mom struggled with an eating disorder all my life. I saw that because she was in a rural area, without a lot of access to therapy, she felt really isolated. I wanted to change that. I wanted to provide quality services to everyone, and that started me into the field. I have struggled with generalized anxiety disorder and have utilized ERP in my own personal life. I now do a lot of response prevention. I tell members, 'I take my anxiety with me. I can tolerate feeling uncomfortable.' Response prevention is part of my lifestyle. There are days that it's not easy. But for the most part, no one would know that. That's how you get to live the life you want—you're not living your life based on OCD's wants. You're living your life based on your own wants.
On top of my mom struggling with an eating disorder and depression, I also believe she had OCD. That led me to want to understand it better. In my area, there weren't a whole lot of services, and there weren't a lot of people who knew what OCD actually was. If other people don’t understand OCD, then people with OCD feel like there’s something wrong with them as people. It keeps them isolated. In reality, there are evidence-based therapies that allow people who have OCD to have the life they want to live. We know that sometimes when someone feels broken or isolated, they seek out trying to get connected to people. So if their network isn't knowledgeable—or we're not having open conversations about what OCD is—nobody gets better.
I've worked with people who have major depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder, and bipolar disorder. One of my first jobs was working in the school system with children who had severe behavioral problems. I realized I really loved the work, but I was seeing kids who had issues I wasn't equipped to understand. It led me to pursue my master's degree, when I began to really understand evidence-based practices.
I make therapy very centered on what you need, while making sure it's following the evidence-based practice. At the beginning, I focus on building our therapeutic relationship so you feel comfortable telling me about your thoughts. We're going to work on recognizing that these thoughts are just thoughts, and we're not going to label them. That will help you start to advocate for yourself and gain insight into your own behaviors.
It might be really hard to be open and honest about what's really going on with you at the very beginning. Those intrusive thoughts, images, and urges can be scary things that you don't want to talk about. But if you're not open about what you're experiencing, you're doing yourself a disservice. I can't really help you if I don't know everything that's going on.
