Daniel Kasper-MacMillan

Licensed Therapist, LCPC

OCD may have done a number on your self-esteem and self-worth. One of the best things I can do as a therapist is to help you tap into your strengths. You may be dealing with intrusive thoughts, but you have the internal strength to recover. You can approach things in a different way and have a better tomorrow. Outside of work, I'm a geek. I help run a zombie live-action role-playing game in the woods of Wisconsin. It's part of a national game. It's a lot of spooky fun and really reduces stress.

I understand what it's like to deal with uncomfortable feelings and feel out of control. I can empathize with how overwhelming intrusive thoughts can feel. I've done ERP therapy myself, and now I have tools I can use to go about my day and focus on things that actually matter to me.

I always had a passion for helping others, and I grew up on a farm tending to sick and injured animals. I thought I would become a physician. I even went to college for pre-med. However, when I shadowed several doctors, I saw they didn't have much patient interaction and were filling out insurance paperwork all day long. I wanted something more personally fulfilling. Luckily, I chose to enroll in a clinical psychology course, and I fell in love. I became fascinated by the intricacies of the human mind and the realization that, as a therapist, my time would be spent directly caring for people and helping them improve their lives. It's a very rewarding experience.

In grad school, I studied a myriad of disorders: anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders—virtually everything that's out there. Everything but OCD, which was not well understood. Then when I started practicing, I encountered a number of people who had OCD. I didn't have the tools to help them. Now I know ERP is the way to go. I thought there was no better specialty to have. A few people in my family have dealt with major depressive disorder. I have post traumatic stress disorder from two separate events in my life. My experience is certainly different from OCD, but I deal with intrusive thoughts, triggers, and uncomfortable feelings and feel like I can’t control them. I can empathize with how overwhelming intrusive thoughts can feel. I've gotten some really good therapy, including ERP therapy, and I can comfortably share my story. Now I have tools I can use to go about my day and focus on things that actually matter to me.

I am passionate about helping people with daunting, all-encompassing disorders. I've worked in community mental health by running an addiction center. I have done a lot of work with substance abuse, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. If you're dealing with depression, anxiety, or substance abuse, every area of your life is affected. The same is true for OCD. I want to help people in a global sense—help them recover from what they're going through and improve their overall quality of life.

First, OCD is a data disorder. Don't be surprised if a certain voice in your head tells you that therapy won't work, isn't a good idea, or will be too hard. OCD will stop at nothing to make sure you're not engaging in therapy, because OCD wants to stick around. Second, come as you are. You don't have to fear that your thoughts are going to negatively impact me. As therapists, we realize these are just thoughts. We're not looking to judge anyone. We're just here to help you.

There have been some improvements since beginning therapy with Dan. Then, following Tuesday’s zoom session with Dan, Justice has been improving in leaps and bounds. He has only washed his hands once each time and with less frequency. He went in a 1/2 mile walk with our 2 dogs yesterday. When he came back, he had a big smile on his face, and said he was going to walk more because he had enjoyed it more than he thought he would have. He asked if he could just walk one way and call and if I could pick him up. Of course I said I would do that! I was so happy to see him outside again! Usually I had to go with him and he would only walk the length of our driveway, but if one of the dogs would pee, he would fo inside, so it was always 5 min. or less of outside time. He is concerned also with salmonella and we have lots of trees all around us as we are in a rural area. This concern kept him from being outdoors. But yesterday, Wednesday, he ended up walking 2 more miles and returned home without calling me to pick him up. He said”’That was fun, I’m going to take a shower”. We all were in disbelief, we usually had to plan taking turns trying to coax him into showering. He had taken one on Monday, and now he was announcing this on his own! I am so beyond thankful to Dan for his winning way with my son, Justice. These developments are a direct reflection of the right fit with a skilled therapist. We at our home are thrilled at his life coming back, and are so eager to see his continued growth! His sister asked him”Do you like your therapist?” He said, “I love him.” I just had to share our story and thank Dan for helping our son. With warm appreciation. Vicki

I have been doing a lot of therapy and Daniel by far is the most understanding and attentive therapist I've come into contact with. Selfishly I wish our sessions could be daily. He makes it so much easier to open up than most people do.

Daniel always does a great job of listening and professionally guiding me in my OCD recovery

Jun 22, 2022

I’ve been living with OCD for 14 years and have seen my share of therapists- 5% good , 95% horrible. Daniel has been amazing getting me through covid and my pregnancy while having contamination ocd. He knows how to challenge me and has me doing exposures frequently. He knows how to start off small and build up to more intense exposures. I can talk to him about seemingly “irrational/taboo/frightening thoughts( that are embarrassing to talk about to people who do not have OCD) and he understands and knows how to challenge them BECAUSE he actually understands how the disorder behaves. He is knowledgeable and compassionate. NOCD truly are the experts in OCD treatment and I would 10/10 recommend to anyone looking for effective help.
